For Xu Dengqian, artistic creation is a ritualized practice to confront inner turmoil. Gripping the engraving knife as he would a pen, he meticulously carves on tens of thousands of metal feathers, repeating the motion until his joints ache—transforming mechanical labor into a physical inscription of relational violence. Through the rhythmic striking of metal, he simultaneously resists rigid realities and performs an alchemical 'softening' of cold, industrial materials.
